What is implantology?
A dental implant is an artificial tooth root made of titanium that is placed in the jawbone. The implant acts as a solid base for attaching a crown, bridge or prosthesis.
Benefits of implantology
-
Durability: implants are durable and often last a lifetime with proper care
-
-
Aesthetic: implants look natural and feel like real teeth, restoring a person's smile and self-confidence
-
-
Comfort and functionality: implants function like natural teeth, allowing patients to eat, talk and laugh normally without discomfort.
The implantation process
To place an implant, a small hole is drilled into the jawbone under local anaesthesia. The implant is placed in that hole, after which the gums are carefully sutured. After that, the implant needs time to grow into the bone. This requires some patience. After it has grown in, the crown, bridge or prosthesis can be made.
Research and planning
The dentist assesses the patient's oral health and takes X-rays and scans to place the implant accurately.
Implant placement
The implant is surgically placed in the jawbone. After placement, a period of healing and osseointegration takes place. Over a period of several months, the bone adheres to the implant, becoming firmly anchored.
Confirmation of final restoration
After the healing period, the permanent dental crown, bridge or prosthesis is attached to the implant.
